Say what you want about the new Sonic Boom. I’m more in favor of Sega’s dark, gritty reboot of Ecco the Dolphin.
Morning warmup. Vortex Queen from Ecco.
busy week—it’s time for a Tides of Time sketch
Zack Smith has written a very comprehensive article about Ecco 1, it’s story, and the marine life depicted in it, and you should read it!
He also gave my silly little blog here a shoutout, so: thank you, Zack, for that and for this wonderful article! :)
Ecco: Defender of the Future - The Stupid Death (by Sparky Lurkdragon)
I was noodling around by myself and decided to see if I could trigger Ecco dying from being out of the water.
It didn’t… go QUITE as planned…
Initial impressions of Ecco the Dolphin 3DS: GOOD. GET IT.
Especially, perhaps, if you haven’t played Ecco before, because there’s a new thing here to help you: Super Dolphin Mode.
Super Dolphin activates an otherwise temporary late-game powerup: Ecco is invincible, doesn’t need to breathe, and damages enemies. It’s great for newer players, I think, or older players like me who are satisfied with proving themselves once already and just want to experience the world again. It will not, however, save you from instant death traps. Because of this, I anticipate the penultimate level being just as mind-crushing as it always has been even with Super Dolphin on. You can toggle it on and off at any time, so if you just want to flick it on for a particularly troublesome bit, feel free!
Aside from that, it’s a very faithful port! The music all seems intact (you can even choose to emulate either Genesis 1 or Genesis 2 sound - Gens 2 sounds better in my humble opinion), the circle pad is a joy to play it with (although I find myself switching to the D-Pad for finesse, like when getting past Eight Arms or directing the Stone Eating Stars - it’s seamless ingame, don’t worry!), and even the glitches and DEBUG MENU are the same as they’ve always been.
(Everyone complaining about Super Dolphin: might I point out you can do pretty much the exact same things by opening up the debug?)
Can’t speak for the 3D effects… 3D hurts my eyes so I always have it off. Sorry!
I love it, and it’s only $5.99. If you have a 3DS and have never played this stunning little gem, I absolutely recommend this port. Hell, even if you have, get it again and show SEGA that Ecco is still loved!
Your mod recommends Ecco 3DS for you and yours. Here’s hoping for Tides of Time 3DS!
Found my new favorite miiverse to spam. Adored these games as a kid, still adore them now.
